Taking her point of departure in a simple draw of cards, in this book Camelia Elias demonstrates the essence of her cartomantic signature based on the imperative to read like the Devil. A 3-card draw, its mirror, and two readings of follow-up questions is all it takes for a whole philosophy and practice of reading cards to unfold.

Why Threads?

With threads we stitch things together. Ever since time immemorial we have venerated beings who could spin threads from animal or plant materials and who could weave them together in a web or a garment for someone to wear and be protected by. We have Ariadne who spun a thread to see Theseus safely through the labyrinth at Minos. We have the Norns in Norse mythology and the Moirae in Greek mythology – who decide how long each human being’s thread should be and how many knots it should have - and who don’t hesitate to cut the threads when it is time. All hail to Urd, Verdande and Skuld, who know the beginning and end of everything, who water the Tree of Life, and represent past, present and future! This book is a tribute and an act of participation in this magic of threads, spinning and sowing.

Why Hagstones?

The Hagstones are gifts of the sea to humans who wish to see the other realms. Peek through the hole nature has drilled in the middle of the hardest flint, and see what awaits you on the other side of now. The Hagstones allow us to be like the Norns who could foretell the future, because they had already seen it clearly. From them Odin learned this craft as well, and therefore these stones which have many names in many cultures, are also known as Odins in the Norse tradition. Odin gave up his one eye so he could see more clearly with the one remaining, and if you put your eye to his stone you will see what is coming for you and you can make preparations for it. We hang Hagstones or Odins tied together with red thread at our gates or doors, and no-one of ill will can then enter our dwelling unannounced. The Hagstone is the greatest protective amulet we know of, and when tied in a firm knot, all that it guards is kept safe and gathered in its web. Thus be it also with this book.

Why New Year’s?

At the turn of the year, much else is also turning. Solstice was here not many days ago, and the Ice giants that held our land in their frozen grip were once more slain by Odin and his brothers, and with his bones and dead flesh they rebuild a green and vibrant world for us to enjoy. As the days lengthen we sit in our warm, well-protected houses and think of things to come. All the threads come together for New Year’s and while some will need to be cut, there are others that will carry us over into the coming year. Urd, Verdande and Skuld will sort those threads out for each one of us, and give long life to those who deserve it. This book celebrates connections and lines as much as anything, but it also speaks the language of knots and twists, much like the helix of our very DNA does.
